| ARE ALL THERMOMETERS ALIKE?
The adage, "If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and walks like a duck then it must be a duck", does not apply to thermometry. A thermometer's beauty is only on the inside. Two products may look alike. In fact, the one of inferior quality may even look better - but this is where the similarity ends. There are so many variables in circuit design, quality of components and construction techniques that we can only show you. To prove this point, we invite you visit our factory where we will assign you one of our engineers who will escort you down our production line and explain the differences in detail. | DIGITAL VS. BI-METAL THERMOMETER (1)?
The advantage of bimetal thermometers is they're less expensive and if designed to be, they can be calibrated. Digital thermometers can be highly accurate and reliable. However, having a digital display which indicates 1/10ths of a degree is a promise but not an guarantee of accuracy. In fact, some digital thermometers are dangerously inaccurate. Worse yet, most cannot be calibrated. This is why F.O.B. INSTRUMENTS LTD. developed and patented, SelfSet™, the world's first self-calibrating digital thermometer. |
| DIGITAL VS. BI-METAL THERMOMETER (2)?
The depth of insertion is a very important difference between digital vs. bi-metal thermometers. The helix (an elongated spiral) shaped coil in a bi-metal thermo is almost 2" (5 cm) long. To get an accurate reading the entire length needs to be inserted. Fair enough, but many foods, especially cut meat are simply not thick enough for this. So, what happens? Heat must migrate up the coil from the part where heat is present. The reading you receive is an average of the dissipated heat over the length of the coil, not an actual reading of the meat's internal temperature. Deceptive, huh? The insertion depth of a digital thermometer is only about 1/4" (0.5 cm). |
| WHAT IS AN "INSTANT READ" THERMOMETER, AND IS IT REALLY 'INSTANT'?
It's a misnomer, actually, generally given to a 1" diameter bi-metal thermometer. In reality, it takes about 18 seconds to attain a reading (measured from room temperature into boiling water). The moniker comes from the perception that the reading is 'instant' only because the pointer reacts very quickly to changes in temperature although actual response time is quite average. |

| WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO USE A THERMOMETER?
Bacteria are everywhere. If food like meat, poultry, and egg products is not handled safely, harmful bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels. Using a food thermometer is the only way to tell if food has reached the temperature sufficient to destroy harmful bacteria. |
